UK-based publisher Eidos Interactive has announced its plans to port Jupiter Lander, a Commodore 64 title originally released 25 years ago, with a modernized version of the game to mobile phones this June.
Considered a clone of Atari’s 1973 arcade game Lunar Lander, Jupiter Lander has players attempting to steer a space craft to safety using only thrusters as directional controls, easing it on to a choice of landing bays.
Ten stages are included, each level allowing the player a limited supply of fuel which is depleted every time the ship’s thrusters are engaged. With each new stage, more and more environment hazards, such as rock formations, test the player’s skill.
Two different modes will be included, an original Jupiter Lander mode recreating the original game’s eight-color palette and retro visuals, and a contemporary version with new graphics, particle effects, and zoom. Both modes will benefit from simple controls suited for mobile phone use.
