  • Sega: Super Monkey Ball Sells 300K On App Store [08.11.08]
  • Super Monkey Ball for the iPhone and iPod Touch sold over 300,000 copies in 20 days through Apple's recently launched App Store, Sega of America president Simon Jeffrey disclosed in a Wall Street Journal report.

Sega Mobile, a Sega of America division, debuted Super Monkey Ball with the App Store on July 10, which opened to 62 countries with the launch. The title was developed by Other Ocean Interactive (Castlevania: Symphony of the Night port for Xbox Live Arcade) and was available as a digital download for $9.99.

Super Monkey Ball, which has appeared on various handheld and home console platforms since the series was introduced as an arcade game in 2000, features three different modes, 110 stages, and tilt controls which take advantage of the iPhone and iPod Touch's three-axis accelerometer.

Said Sega of America president Simon Jeffrey: "That's a substantial business. It gives iPhone a justifiable claim to being a viable gaming platform."

So far, iPhone and iPod Touch owners have downloaded over 60 million programs from the App Store, including free applications, with commercial releases contributing towards $30 million in sales in the month since the store launched, according to Apple chairman and CEO Steve Jobs.
