The Nielsen Company has released its yearly round-up of the most popular trends in several areas of the American entertainment industry. This year's findings cover television shows, movies, books, video games, and other fields relating to entertainment consumption.
Here are Nielsen's top 10 mobile games of 2008, ranked by third-quarter revenue share:
1. Tetris (7.0% share of revenue)
2. Bejeweled (4.0%)
3. Guitar Hero III (3.6%)
4. Wheel of Fortune (2.6%)
5. Pac-Man (2.5%)
6. The Oregon Trail (1.9%)
7. Ms. Pac-Man (1.7%)
8. Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader? (1.6%)
9. Tetris Mania (1.6%)
10. Surviving High School (1.2%)
This year's results find EA's mobile adaptation of the classic puzzler Tetris leading with a 7% share of revenue, followed by PopCap's Bejeweled at a distant second. EA also scores a second chart hit this year with Tetris Mania, which ranks at ninth place.
Guitar Hero III has proven to be a major success for Activision, meanwhile, with the title ranking as the top non-puzzler mobile title of the year. Sony's Wheel of Fortune ranks high in this year's findings as well, as Namco Bandai earns two places in 2008's chart thanks to the continuing success of Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man.
The impressive performance of Gameloft's The Oregon Trail serves as further indication that mobile gamers have an eye for the classics -- five of this year's ranked titles are mobile remakes of 1980s-era arcade and computer games. Finally, rounding out this year's list are Capcom's trivia game Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader? at eighth place, and Vivendi's social sim Surviving High School at tenth.
